VASE History — Criteria and Development of the Rubric

A draft of the criteria for the VASE rubric was developed by Tina Farrell and submitted to Ben Gollehon and the team of Houston Art Supervisors for revision and approval. This rubric was adapted from Edmund Feldman's Aesthetic Criticism, Varieties of Visual Experience,1972, the national standards for art education, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in visual art, and the foundational aesthetic elements in critiquing any work of visual art. The criteria were separated into two categories:

  1. the Student Interview, which included Research and Application to work, Execution and Technique, Use of Elements and Principles of Art, Aesthetics and Critical Judgment, Personal Expression, and
  2. the Artwork Evaluation, which included Purpose, Technique, Personal Expression, Organization, and Integration. The Ratings were developed on a Likert scale of 1 to 4, with a 4 representing a superior rating. This rating system was purposeful as the Likert Scale for Music was 1 to 4, with a 1 representing a superior rating.
