Area V encompasses a vast number of counties and many school districts. Our enchanting part of the state lends itself to incredible art curriculum in these districts with the result of many awards and activities occurring on a regular basis throughout this area of the state. One of our goals is to provide news and information about the art students and teachers in our area by featuring various school districts. Three San Antonio districts sent the following information and are showcased in this write-up; all of these districts teach TEKS based art curricula and are excited about the 2006-2007 school year. 2005-2006 highlights from North East ISD, San Antonio, included many significant events and successful shows for elementary and secondary art students. Outstanding winners included a $9,000 scholarship for a student winning the Western Art Contest Grand Champion Award, a gold seal at State VASE, and the overall winner of the San Antonio Christmas Card contest and the design on the citys Christmas cards. See the North East ISD visual art webpage to see the exciting activities for 2006-2007. 2005-2006 significant news from East Central ISD, San Antonio, included the exhibition of East Central High School students and teachers art at the Alameda Theater Complex. Participating students completed research and artwork regarding the Alameda-Past, Present, and Future, and were provided an opportunity to experience a professional career pathway. East Central High School was selected as the only high school in the Alameda Theater Emerging Artists Series. East Central is continuing with more outstanding activities for 2006-2007. 2005-2006 highlights from Northside ISD, San Antonio, included stellar shows and events throughout the year. The annual 2-day Los Leones Art Festival featured a Chalkfest competition complete with rotating trophy and a publicity design student contest which provides the design for T-shirts, invitations, and postcards promoting the event. This festival showcases the work of students from 57 elementary schools, 23 secondary schools, several special schools, and community artists, and involves a myriad of business partners who honor art students. The district held a vertical alignment K-12 show that filled a field house for two weekends and had docent sponsored fieldtrips to view the student work. Northside ISD had 5 gold seal winners at State VASE, and a National Congressional Art Award winner who received a $12,000 art scholarship plus a family trip to Washington DC to receive the award. Also, of note is the Northside Ceramic Enterprise which provides in-depth, intense ceramic training, and has now become open to other districts throughout the state. See the link to the PowerPoint. We look forward to hearing from other counties and districts. Send your representatives information so your district may be featured.
