Celebrate 51 years of Youth Art Month in March 2012 !!!


March is National Youth Art Month and the State of Texas has been a leader in Youth Art Month since 1961. To celebrate this special month, TAEA sponsors a flag design contest, an exhibit of 100 pieces of student art work PreK- 12th grade, and a student award celebration and reception at the state Capitol in Austin.

Welcome Samantha Melvin,Burnet ISD.. YOUR new Vice President for Youth Art Month. Samantha will be taking over allof the YAM duties after the November conference. All YAM enries(YAM flag, Capitol YAM, TASB) should be sent to Samantha in Burnet. Check the 2012 YAM booklet for her mailing address.

2011 YAM Scrapbooks

Congratulations Texas,we are the National winner for the YAM report/scrapbook! A committee of representatives of the Council, The Art & Creative Materials Institute, the National Art Education Association, and other interested parties reviewed our TAEA 2011 YAM report/scrapbook and awarded Texas the Clair Flanagan Memorial Grand Award for your outstanding participation in the 2011 observance of Youth Art Month. It is the highest honor awarded for the scrapbook! The scrapbook highlights the incredible art programs and celebrations that happen in our schools during Youth Art Month . Check out our award winning scrapbook at Conference in Austin in November at the YAM booth in the exhibit hall. Our award will be presented at the NAEA conference in New York in March 2012 at the Delegates Assembly. Keep up the great work Texas!!!

We are giving 4 awards for Texas YAM scrapbooks at our conference in Galveston in November. Congratulations to Shawn Tadlock, Pearland ISD. They win our top honor and our YAM Above and Beyond Award for their work with their community YAM artwalk in Pearland. Awards of Excellence will also be awarded to Lisa Miller, Brazos Valley Art Education Association (BVAEA), Mel Basham, Shepard ISD and Plano Art Leaders (PAL). 2012 Youth Art Month Flag Design Contest

The 2012 YAM flag design contest runs now until December 9, 2011. Official rules for the contest are on page 12 in the 2012 YAM booklet and the official form is on page 18 in the YAM booklet. The 2011 winner was Austin Huens from Coppell High School.

2012 Capitol Exhibit and Awards Ceremony

Mark your calendars!!!. Due to a conflict with the NAEA conference in New York in 2012, the dates for the Capitol Exhibit had to be postponed until late March. The exhibit will hang from March 16-March,2012 with the YAM awards ceremony and reception on March 25th.

It has been an absolute pleasure serving as the YAM VP for the past two years. It has been rewarding, exhilarating, challenging, exhausting and fun. I will miss seeing all teh fabulous artwork created from students all across Texas. Thank you so much for your support for Youth Art Month in Texas. I know I leave YAM in great hands with Samantha Melvin. She will do a fabulous job.

TASB / TASA Exhibit

The 2012 TASB/TASA exhibit will be held in Austin from September 28-30, 2012. Online registration for this event will be August 7th- September 7th. Save some student artwork over the summer so you don't miss out on this important exhibit!

2011 Governor's Gallery

The Governor and his staff have chosen the ten works of art from the Youth Art Month Capitol exhibit that will hang in his business office at the Capitol for the next year. These art works will be professionally framed and the students will be honored with a special reception at the Governors office this summer.
